The obverse has the popular Walking Lady Liberty design by Adolph Weinman, inscribed with the year of issue, “LIBERTY” and “In God We Trust” on the field.
On the reverse bears the eagle behind a shield, mainly being the Great Seal of the United States of America. Its inscription being “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR”, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.

No mint marks were added as the coins were initially only minted at the San Francisco Mint. Bullion coins were mainly minted without mint marks. Proof coins were issued with an S (San Francisco) mint mark. Additional mints started issuing of Silver Eagle proof coins at the Philadelphia (P mint mark) and West Point (W mint mark) mints from 1999.
A total of 530,323,888 silver Eagles were minted from 1986 to 2018. Bullion Silver Eagle coins are not sold directly to the public but issued to banks, verified coin dealers and authorized purchasers at spot price plus $2. Proof and Uncirculated Silver Eagles, however, were sold directly to the public.
